結構前に読んだのですが、孤高の刑事ハリー・ボッシュ シリーズのマイクル・コナリーの初リーガルサスペンス。ＬＡの街を高級車リンカーン・タンカーで走りまわる中年の刑事弁護士マイクル(ミッキー)・ハラー。父親は高名な弁護士（ボッシュ・シリーズに登場しているよ！）、自分は二度の離婚、オフィスを持たず元妻を電話番としている、正義を貫くってわけでもない金儲け主義の弁護士。いい感じの汚れ具合です。彼が受ける仕事は「フランチャイズ」と呼ばれるセレブ相手の弁護。舞い込んだ事件は、不動産業の資産家の軽薄息子の暴行事件。これが胡散臭さ抜群のネタで。ミッキーは"依頼人を有罪にしない"という目的のためだけに奔走しますが、さすがに完全に割り切って処理することは出来ません。追い込まれるミッキーは、人としてどうするべきか苦悩します。ボッシュ・シリーズほど重くなく、適度にヘビーな骨太サスペンス。必読です。

で、この小説の映画化権は発売より前に売れたそうで。トミー・リー・ショーンズがメガホンをとるらしく、主役はマシュー・マコノヒーらしく、ワタクシ的に後者にがっかり。ミッキーみたいな人間をマコノヒがやると、本当に薄っぺらになっちゃうよーって。ワタクシ脳内のミッキーはロバート・ダウニーJR.だった。アイアンマンのトニー・スタークの影響。仕事仲間のラウルは、デクスターのエンジェルで。絵的に濃いけどね。
